Members of the National Broadcasting Council met with President Andrzej Duda. The conversation took place at the request of the chairman of the National Broadcasting Council, Machie Svirski, and was about changes in the public media. “The president wants to ease his emotions,” says Prof. Tadeusz Kowalski, member of the National Council.
“At the meeting, members of the National Broadcasting Council presented their opinion on the current situation in the public media. The conclusions of the meeting are as follows: it is necessary to repair the public media and this issue should be resolved urgently. It was agreed that the National Broadcasting Council, as a constitutional body and appointed for this purpose, will prepare a draft of the resolution and after its adoption will submit the decisions to the President and the Council of Ministers,” said Grazina Ignacak-Bandić. The head of the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland announced this on the social network.
Is Andrzej Duda not going to escalate the conflict?
Prof. Tadeusz Kowalski, a member of the National Broadcasting Council, explains to “Preserve” that the president wants to ease his emotions and obtain a legal status that will not cause anyone to suspect. – By the way, we talked about returning to the legal order of 2015. This is, of course, a very preliminary statement. The alternative was the proposal of the chairman of the National Broadcasting Council for further actions, including: prosecution. However, in my opinion, there is no desire on the part of the president to escalate the conflict, but there is a desire to seek constructive solutions, such as the implementation of the decision of the Constitutional Tribunal and thereby restoring the role of the National Broadcasting Council. In the selection of public media authorities – says Prof. Kowalski.
The meeting was held, among others, due to the change of powers of TVP, Polish Radio and Polish Press Agency, and these companies were later liquidated. These were the decisions of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz. The majority of the National Broadcasting Council, elected by President Duda or the Sejm, then dominated by PiS, criticized this way of introducing changes in the public media.
“The National Broadcasting Council calls upon the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and all persons to comply with his orders, to stop violating the law, destroying civil liberties and depriving the public of access to information,” KRRiT members Maciej Świrski, Agnieszka Glapiak wrote in a statement. Marzena Pachuska and Hanna Karp.
