For the second time in a row, Szymon Marciniak won the International Federation of Football Historians and Statisticians (IFFHS) plebiscite for the best referee of the year. In 2023, he was in charge, including: the Champions League and Club World Cup finals.
He was awarded for the first time in 2022, in which, among others, he was the main judge. World Cup final between Argentina and France in Qatar.

“In 2023, Szymon Marciniak was again awarded by the IFFHS as the best referee of the year in the world thanks to his regularity and charisma. He received 175 points and was clearly ahead of the Italian Daniele Orsato, the winner of this award in 2020, and the Frenchman Clement Turpin”, – it is written on the official website of the online organization.
The Pole, who turns 43 on Sunday, finished 80 points ahead of Orsato, while Turpin led by 111. The next places were occupied by Englishmen Michael Oliver – with 36 points and Anthony Taylor – with 34 points.
The IFFHS, which has been in existence since 1984, researches the history of football and produces statistics. Every year it organizes plebiscites in different categories. At the end of December, Norwegian Erling Haaland was recognized as the best footballer of 2023, and Spanish Aitana Bonmat as the best footballer.
