The Australian, among others, has defeated Novak Djokovic in two sets, which certainly gave him confidence in his abilities. Zverev, on the other hand, has not yet lost at the United Cup, and therefore, he has beaten Lorenzo Sonego, Adrian Mannarino and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

At the United Cup, 18 teams were divided into six groups of three teams. Groups A (with Poland), C and E played in Perth, the rest were in Sydney. The group winners advanced to the quarter-finals, as did one of the best runners-up in either city.
Australians took first place in Group C, confidently defeating Serbia 3-0 in the quarter-finals. Germany, on the other hand, took second place in Group D (behind France) and defeated Greece 2:1 in the quarterfinals.
