My beloved editorial team of “Do Rzeczy” asked me to write an analysis of the new political reality created after December 13, 2023. I was asked to answer the questions: “What is this conflict?”, “What is his stake?” Finally, I was asked to answer the question: Who will win this battle?

What is this conflict about?

Here we go one by one. What is this conflict about? It is surprising that the decision of Donald Tusk's government to demonstratively break the rules of the law as a takeover of the public media was met with such eloquent silence from the most important political scientists and commentators on the Polish political scene. Ian Rokita became the best analyst of the new situation. He called Tusk's actions “practice of a limited state of emergency”. As Rokita writes: “This practice involves the government suspending de facto (but not de jure) existing law for a period of time in order to facilitate the takeover of previously uncontrolled institutions. This is a practice that the government intends to quickly and effectively hit the most sensitive interests of the right, after which (and here Rokita suggests – note PS), efforts should be made to restore the normal rule of law. as soon as possible.

As a former politician of the Civil Platform writes: “At the moment I am writing this text, that is, in the last days of 2023, it is not yet known whether this is a one-time concept, motivated by the ruling left center. By exaggerating the importance of government control of television. Or is it a development concept aimed at a broad shift in the balance of power in Polish politics? As Rokita points out, Tusk is taking advantage of the fact that the classic language of “lawlessness versus the rule of law” has been appropriated by his camp in recent years. And this largely helps him to carry out such a legally scandalous operation.

Rokita is right.
