The Portuguese will travel to Rize on Tuesday to watch his new side's match against Kaikur Rizespor from the stands. Besiktas are currently 6th in the league table – the arrival of Santos is expected to improve the club's fortunes and lead to another national championship. The first match of Besiktas under the leadership of Santos is scheduled for January 13. Then, at their own stadium, the Istanbul team will host the 18th team of the Turkish League – Fatih Karagumruk.
The Portuguese coach is returning to work after an eight-month break, i.e. the end of cooperation with the Polish national team. Santos led the white-reds from January to September 2023. Under his leadership, Polish players played only six games, won three and lost.
Santos' break from club football lasted fourteen years. The last club he managed was Paok Thessaloniki. Later, he decided to cooperate with the teams of Greece (2010-2014) and Portugal (2014-2022). With the latter, he won the European Championship in 2016.
