“As a political prisoner, I am starting a hunger strike from the first day of my imprisonment,” Mariusz Kaminski said in a statement. The letter addressed to the Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar was read at a press conference on Wednesday by Blazej Poboży, former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration and currently an advisor to President Andrzej Duda.
“I declare that I consider my conviction in illegal actions in the fight against corruption and the deprivation of the parliamentary mandate as an act of political retribution. Therefore, as a political prisoner, I start a hunger strike from the first day of my imprisonment. Kaminsky writes.
“I request it immediately release from prison “All members of the former management of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau, covered by the pardon act issued by the President of the Republic of Poland in 2015,” the PiS politician added.
Eichart's comments
Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Eichart, who is responsible for prisons at the Ministry of Justice, was asked about Mariusz Kaminski's statement.
– Everyone has the right not to eat or drink. This is the right to personal freedom, everyone can decide about it, Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Eichart said at the press conference. – When a person is under state supervision or in prison, he is subject to medical examination and body measurements. He could be placed in an infirmary or a prison hospital, he added.
Journalists asked whether Mariusz Kaminski could be force-fed. – Only the court can decide in such a situation when it is life-threatening – answered the deputy head of the Ministry of Justice.
Pobozh: We have the first political prisoners since 1989
Blažej Poboži told reporters that Kaminski and Vesic “became the first political prisoners since 1989 yesterday.”
– When the President was meeting with Belarusian oppositionists, the services subordinated to the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration forcibly arrested the members of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. Deputies equipped with immunity and pardoned by the president – these are political prisoners, – he claimed.
