January 13, 2023 marks five years since the attack on the Mayor of Gdańsk, Pawel Adamowicz, which took place during the 2019 Christmas Charity Grand Orchestra Finale in Gdańsk Old Town. The president died a day after being stabbed.

In a special edition of “Debata Dnia” on Polsat News, host Agnieszka Gozdira spoke to relatives and friends of the tragically deceased local government politician. One of the guests was Pavel Adamovich's wife – Magdalena.

“Something has changed since October 15”

– Pavel Adamovich's wife is still alive. I have been single for many years and I feel much better with that term than being called a widow, she said at the beginning.

– Pavel is still present in our family life and conversations. But we had to learn to live with our daughters again, he added.

Remembering his tragically deceased wife, he emphasized that “Pavel was always smiling.” – There was just great joy in him and he shared this joy. He smiled at people because he loved people and liked being around them, she said.

Magdalena Adamovich admitted that she is not afraid of people even after what happened.

– It is natural that I would be very isolated and afraid of people, fearing that someone would hurt me, but I am not afraid of people. I still have the confidence that Pavel taught me, I still believe in people, he assured.

– If we respect each other, don't get angry, smile and are open, then we have nothing to fear from each other – he emphasized.

– This is not a utopia – he added. He also noted that “something has changed after October 15 (parliamentary elections – ed.)”.

– People have changed a little, they smile more – he said.

– I believe that there will still be such smiling people. We as a society hit rock bottom at some point. However, I believe the worst is over. Now we have a lot of work to do in terms of reconciliation and showing the truth, he said.

“Feelings killed Paul, words killed him”

According to him, “for eight years public media divided people and Poles were very divided. – Of course, this division still exists, but I see that it is changing – he said.

According to Magdalena Adamovic, those who contributed to this “must answer”.

– This is not about revenge, but about responsibility for your words and actions. What was done, but also what was not done, he emphasized.

– I would like all the violations that were spread in the public media to be publicly recorded, – he added.

He said it would be a good idea to do this with a “commission of inquiry broadcast on the public media”. – I would very much like such a commission to be created – he said.

– When it comes to changes, everyone should start from themselves. If we look at each other and wait, this spiral of hatred will perpetuate itself, he said.

– I am not a man of revenge. I have the gift of not hating. I don't even have a grudge against Paul's killer. That's great, he added.

She admitted that she “barely thinks” about her husband's killer. – I don't think in this sense that it was the knife that killed Pavel. The knife was just a tool. Pavel was killed by feelings, words killed him, he said.

– And this man and this knife were just tools. They were last. If it wasn't for that feeling, this man wouldn't have decided, he concluded.
