Mass release in the Agora. Almost 200 people will lose their jobs
The company announced on Tuesday that it would need to lay off about 190 people by the end of March.
“The reason for the planned group termination in the field of digital and print press is the market factors caused by the trend of continuous decline in the sales of the print press, connected with the flow of readers to other communication channels, and the reason for this in the Internet space is clear. Deterioration of revenues from advertising sales in the open market model and increase in the position of global platforms,” Agora said in a statement.
The statement also explains that this action is necessary to stabilize the company's financial situation.
“The ongoing restructuring is a necessary condition for the stabilization of the financial situation of the digital and print press and the Internet spheres, as well as for ensuring their stability, development and market position in the coming years”, – it is written.
The company assured that it will carry out the layoffs “by taking care of the employees, offering them the compensation exempted by law and additional benefits, the amount and terms of which will be subject to the agreement with the unions.”
The unions are not happy
On Tuesday afternoon, the trade unions operating in Agora met with the management council. In the announcement of the negotiations, it was recalled that the last such large layoff took place in November 2022.
“Dear trade union people and friends! 190 people will be dismissed from “Gazeta Wyborcza” and Gazeta.pl as part of the collective dismissal. Today at 17:30 we start negotiations on the terms of dismissal, with the support of our colleagues, kolex and colleagues from NSZZ Solidarność, the employees' initiative trade union and the works council. It has been 14 months since the last mass layoff in November 2022. Cross your fingers for us,” read the statement of the trade union of the Defense Committee. Gazeta Wyborcza.
“The best management board in the history of Agora”, as a prominent member of the supervisory board of Agora SA claimed in 2021, it's all very sad. I'm at a loss for words,” the Facebook post added.
