He also emphasized that “Russia has a chance to put an end to this conflict and the accompanying human tragedies, for which it bears full responsibility.” He added that for this purpose, Moscow “must withdraw all its troops from the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine.”

“This is the most important condition for the restoration of long-term peace and the maintenance of the international order based on law,” the French diplomat noted.

Paris's stance angered former Russian president and former prime minister, now vice-chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, who posted a scathing post on social media.

“France believes that Ukraine, in accordance with the UN Charter, has the right to retaliate against the aggressor on the territory of Russia, namely in Belgorod, for the purpose of self-defense.
