Facebook and Instagram have long faced accusations that they are addictive and, in many cases, causing mental health crises among young people.
Meta Platforms said Tuesday that it will hide more content from adults on Instagram and Facebook than before. This is the result of pressure from regulatory bodies around the world to protect children from harmful content in apps.
Meta said in a blog post that all teens will now be placed under the most restrictive content control settings in the app, and additional search terms will be restricted on Instagram.
Meta said the move would make it harder for teenagers to come across sensitive content such as suicide, self-harm and eating disorders when using Instagram's search and browsing features.
The company said the solutions, which will roll out in the coming weeks, will help provide a more “age-appropriate” experience.
Meta is under pressure in both the United States and Europe over allegations that its apps are addictive and, in many cases, causing mental health crises among young people.
Attorneys general from 33 US states, including California and New York, sued the company in October, saying it repeatedly misled the public about the dangers of its platforms.
Regulatory scrutiny has intensified following US Senate testimony by a former Meta employee who claimed the company was aware of harassment and other harm facing teenagers on the platforms but failed to take action against it.
