– For some time now, the entire public opinion has been electrified by the case of Mr. Mariusz Kaminski and Maciej Vesic, – the president said in a statement given to the media. – This situation is particularly difficult for me – he emphasized.
President: I am starting the pardon procedure
– Mr. Mariusz Kaminski and Macie Vesik are political prisoners. Their wives came to ask me to release their husbands. Both politicians do not receive food, Andrzej Duda said.
– My act of pardon in 2015 was legal. Nevertheless, today the gentlemen are in prison and their lives are in danger every day. That is why I am starting the pardon procedure, the president said.
As he explained, the application will be submitted to the Attorney General, who may release the prisoners from serving the sentence during the trial.
Duda also called on everyone who will take part in the rally in front of the Seimas on Thursday to keep calm.
The case of Kaminski and Vesik
Mariusz Kaminski and Mackie Vesik stayed on Tuesday evening They were arrested in the presidential palace, where they stayed at the invitation of President Andrzej Duda. PiS politicians were first taken to the police station at ul. Grenadiers, and then in the Grokhov pre-trial detention center.
According to Gražina Ignacak-Bandić, head of the presidential office, police entered the palace without the president's presence when he went to the Belvedere to meet with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsykhanuskaia. Officers showed arrest warrants for Kaminski and Vesik. Politicians should have been surprised and not resisted.
On December 20, 2023, the court sentenced the former heads of the SSB to two years of absolute imprisonment for the so-called Land scandal, despite the fact that in 2015 President Andrzej Duda used the amnesty law against them (after an indefinite sentence).
PiS politicians do not recognize either the court verdict or the decision to terminate the parliamentary mandate.
