Gas block instead of carbon
In a later note, PGE's president, Wojciech Dabrowski, noted that exiting old coal units is part of the company's plan. Energy transformation. Ultimately, all manufacturers must transition from solutions that emit a lot of pollutants to low- and zero-emission energy.
The largest gas and steam unit in Poland, currently under construction in Rybnik, with a capacity of 882 MW, will effectively replace the withdrawn coal units, ensuring a stable energy supply for the entire region, Wojciech Dabrowski said.
“The new unit will significantly reduce the emission of dust and sulfur oxides, which will contribute to the improvement of air quality in the region and Thanks to the significant reduction in CO2 emissions, the cost impact of CO2 emission allowances will be limited for energy production”, said the head of PGE.
Changes in the Rybnik power plant
Units No. 3 and 4 are the next 200 MW units to be shut down at the Rybnik Power Plant. Units 1 and 2 (also called Two Hundred Units) were commissioned in late 1972 and May 1973, and the company closed them in 2021.
In turn, units No. 3 and 4 were commissioned in October 1973 and at the end of January 1974, all of which were to be replaced by the above-mentioned gas and steam units.
But Blocks No. 5-8 are still functioning in this plant with a total capacity of 900 MW total. They were commissioned in 1978.
New steam and gas block
The value of this investment is estimated at PLN 4 billion net. The block is being built by a consortium of Polimex Mostostal and Siemens. The block consumes about 1 billion cubic meters. gas per year.
This gas passes through the gas pipelines of the gas system. On Monday, the gas transmission operator signed contracts for the construction of the Racibórz-Rybnik gas pipelines, 38.7 km long, and the Kędzierzyn Koźle-Racibórz gas pipelines, 37 km long.
Both commissioned gas pipelines (along with a 4.5 km connecting gas pipeline) will form an 80 km section of the transmission network that will fuel the 882 MW unit in Ribnik. Both gas pipelines are planned to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2026.
The gas and steam unit currently under construction in Ribnik has been awarded a 17-year contract at the main capacity market auction in December 2022. It will enter into force from 2027.
Power plant in Ribnik
