“War” on the cover, and below, in small print, the names of the greats of war reporting – Hemingway, Steinbeck, Herry, Fallacci, Politkowska, Kapuscinski, Gellhorn. Above in bold and large font: Wojciech Jagielski. usurpation? Not at all, although the reader should carefully follow each chapter to see where the authors' names are missing. Because that means that this part was written by Wojciech Jagielski himself. “alone” in two senses – independently and as the important, who knows if the most important author of this volume.
Although he is modest as always: “The book you have just opened is not a collection of the most outstanding war correspondents, a tribute to masters or a review of the best war reports, but simply a personal selection of events, correspondence and their authors. . Poor and limited knowledge of German, Italian, Chinese or Arabic meant that I had to limit my choices to texts published in Polish, English and Russian. I've probably forgotten or left out many reporters or writers that some would consider canonical in other genres. I probably haven't even heard of many of them. That is why I refrain from an anthology of this book, the preparation of which requires mastery of literary studies and the most meticulous research. If I had only modest reporting skills, I would not have been able to cope with this task.
Don't be fooled by these warnings. Not only is this a great anthology, it's more. A guide to reporting from conflict zones, with a professor who is Poland's top war reporter. His introduction to the presented texts alone could constitute a volume worth purchasing separately, in which Wojciech Jagielski presents himself in real life. You will get other featured authors for free.
