Kerber cannot save successful performances at the United Cup. Although she has not had an easy time, she has only won one set so far against Carolina Garcia. She lost to Maria Sakkar and Jasmin Paolini to nil.

Tomljanovic is doing slightly better, having beaten Serbia's Natalia Stevanovic in two games in her last match. Before that, she lost in straight sets to Jessica Pegula and Katie Boulter.
At the United Cup, 18 teams were divided into six groups of three teams. Groups A (with Poland), C and E played in Perth, the rest were in Sydney. The group winners advanced to the quarter-finals, as did one of the best runners-up in either city.
Australians took first place in Group C, confidently defeating Serbia 3-0 in the quarter-finals. Germany, on the other hand, took second place in Group D (behind France) and defeated Greece 2:1 in the quarterfinals.
