What is SSW?
This time, let's start by discussing the phenomenon itself, because it doesn't happen very often. The last significant SSW was recorded in 2009. The key to understanding the sudden stratospheric warming is that the polar vortex shapes the weather in the same way as the famous El Nino. Malicious people claim that it says much less than that, because its name is a little less “marketing”.
SSW causes The structure of the polar vortex weakens. It may even disappear or icy air masses will “float” further south. Sometimes the vortex can also be divided into several smaller parts.
The phenomenon is dynamic and we do not yet know how it will affect this year's winter season in Poland. However, the fact is that Everything will be clear in a few days. This is how long we need to judge whether we will have a truly arctic winter or a fairly warm early spring.
What is the weather like on Tuesday, 01.02.24 in the morning?
Let's go back to the “here and now”. High pressure over Scandinavia and the European part of Russia, which brings in cold, arctic air masses, is getting bolder. The morning will bring a clear division of Poland into a cold part and a slightly pleasant positive temperature for everyone.
Now it is almost certain that the frost will catch:
- in Warmia and Mazury,
- in Podlasie,
- in the northeastern part of Mazovia,
- In the northern suburbs of the Lublin region.
In Podkarpacie, Kielce, Lesser Poland and Upper Silesia it will be cold, but with positive values (about 1-2 degrees). It is warmest in Greater Poland, Kujawi, Lodz region and the central part of Mazovia – even 4 lines below zero there.
Two large air masses collide It doesn't give much chance for good weather. The morning will be very ugly in most parts of the country. It rains and snows in the east. Only Silesians and residents of West Malopolska have a small chance of clearing.
After a short break, many weather warnings from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Resources are back. On Tuesday, the IMWM warned:
- warming up
- heavy snow
- heavy rain
- strong wind,
- icing.
The situation is very dynamic, we recommend that you follow the current announcements on the IMWM website:
What's the weather like on Tuesday, 01/02/24 in the afternoon?
The meteorological situation across the country will not change much. Cold will continue to rule and divide the Northeast. Warm air masses will rest on the left bank of the Vistula and in Podkarpassie. 24-hour frosts will return in the Carpathians, with a special emphasis on the Beskid Zhivetsky and Tatra mountains.
In the afternoon, a large front with rain and snow will approach Poland from the west. There may be very heavy rain in some places. The rain will especially affect the residents of the Lubusz region and Greater Poland. We expect it It will fall in the Sudetenland, Upper Silesia and the Beskids.
We have marked in green the areas where we expect rain, and in blue the areas where snow may fall. In addition, there will still be some precipitation in Warmia and Mazury.
What is the weather like on Tuesday, 01.02.24 in the evening?
A warm low from the west will continue to push further waves of rain across our country. It could be a very wet evening and night in almost all of western and central Poland. As if that wasn't enough, the temperature will begin to rise rapidly. We expect the mercury to reach +7 degrees Celsius in Lower Silesia.
Heat also in the Opole region, Upper Silesia and Malopolska – 4 lines below zero there. However, the heat wave will not be able to move the cold air masses in the northeastern part of Warmia, Masuria, Podlasie and Masovia. We will still write negative temperature everywhere, up to -4°C. This happens practically everywhere:
However, it should be noted that The snow cover in Poland will slowly begin to recover. All weather signs point to white landscapes on Wednesday morning in the north-east of the country, as well as in the Tatra Mountains.
What is worth emphasizing? This is not the last word of winter. The white powder will rise, which we will tell you about in tomorrow's weather news!
