Agora is planning a mass release. By the end of March, it is going to terminate the contract with almost 200 people in the press and Internet segments. A discussion has already been held on the mentioned issue between the management board and the trade unions.
As “Wyborcza” reporter and member of the Inicjatywa Pracownicza trade union operating in Agora Bartosz Jozefiak said in an interview with Wirtualne Media, the next round of negotiations will start on Tuesday. He emphasizes that “the road to the final is long.”
GW employee: Kursky vows no layoffs
As Jozefiak emphasized, the employees of “Gazeta Viborchi” did not expect to be dismissed and are very surprised and angry about it.
– Jaroslav Kurski even promised Wyborcza during a meeting with journalists that while he was the chief editor, he would not be fired – the reporter noted.
– For the last two years The bosses of “Vyborchi” told us fairy talesHow the company is growing fantastically, how we will grow after the separation as a new company. (…) In December, Yaroslav Kursky sent us another maudlin e-mail in which he thanked us for protecting democracy. Now, this mess rests on the shoulders of First Deputy Editor-in-Chief Roman Imielski and other deputies, he added.
However, the first deputy editor of the newspaper claims that nothing like that happened. – Iosefiak's statement is unfair and contradicts the facts. The editor is not responsible for the dismissal, but the owner and publisher, i.e. Agora, adds Kurski in an interview with the portal Wirtualnemedia.pl.
– I never said that there will be no layoffs in the editorial office. It is a difficult situation for us too, says Roman Imielski.
Kącki case and dismissal
As Jozefiak emphasizes to Wirtualne Media, “People are devastated and bitter, they feel cheated.” – Especially since Katski's case happened on the weekend – he said.
It appeared in the weekend edition of “Gazeta Wyborcza” in early January Marcin Kącki's article, which caused a great stir in public opinion. The journalist decided to confess about his personal life. In the text “My journalism – alcohol, failed therapies, women in love, neglected daughters and the fear of dawn” he described, among others. After the death of his older brother, he justified his relationship with women and his bad behavior with family trauma, working conditions or alcohol addiction. It quickly became clear that the issue had a deeper meaning. One of the victims of the journalist – Karolina Rogaska from “Newsweek” spoke.
– These issues are different only at first glance. Why was this text published? In my opinion, proper editing was not done. People read the text, but there was no editorial work. This is a mare of fifty thousand. Someone should have sat down with Kakki, this text should have been about something, but it was about everything and nothing. Such a publication should not appear in such a medium, which aspires to be one of the most opinion-forming in Poland – says the trade unionist, adding that decisions on dismissal will only “cause chaos, like Katzki, it will be no less, but more”.
“Vibortsa” funeral? Jozefiak's harsh words
In an interview with Wirtualne Media, Jozefiak also emphasizes that the employees have a grudge against the editorial board for not telling them about the layoffs earlier. As he points out, they should take the results, not ordinary employees, although he knows that this will not happen. – They will have no effect Because editing is no longer serious. What the events of the past weekend show – he recalls.
Iosefiak expects the employees who avoided layoffs to receive a raise.
– if the remaining part of the salary remains the same, We are currently observing Vybortsa's funeral. You can't run a serious newspaper by cutting the staff by a quarter and leaving the rest in emotional turmoil, he says.
Mass release in the Agora. Almost 200 people will lose their jobs
The company announced on Tuesday that it needs to lay off about 190 people by the end of March.
“The reason for the planned group termination in the field of digital and print press is the market factors caused by the constant downward trend of print press sales, connected with the flow of readers to other communication channels, and in the Internet space the reason for this is clear. Deterioration of revenues from advertising sales in the open market model and increase in the position of global platforms,” Agora said in a statement.
The statement also explains that this action is necessary to stabilize the company's financial situation.
