Gianluigi Buffon wants a revolution in football.

Gianluigi Buffon ended an incredible career last summer – hanging up his boots after 1,000 professional appearances and 176 caps for Italy. After retirement, he continues to be active in the world of football and makes various proposals to “beautify” world football. The first change will concern the goals.

In an interview given to Tuttosport, Buffon suggested increasing the number of goals in the future.

1. Will Robert Lewandowski's record be broken? “Athelia”

– The dimensions of the goals have been the same since 1875. Maybe they were too big then, maybe they were right. They could have these dimensions for a maximum of 50-60 years. Today everything has changed – players, goalkeepers – says Buffon.

According to Italian legend, the physical condition of football players when football appeared and now is completely different.

– As a 17-year-old, I was one of the top five players in Serie A in 1998. Last year in Parma I was among the top five, but only among 22 outfield players. Goalkeepers got bigger, but outfield players also got faster, more unpredictable and stronger. Their technique has also improved, notes the former goalkeeper.

Buffon points out that at the moment the length of the goals only has an advantage for the goalkeepers, but at the same time the spectacular nature of the matches suffers.

– 30 years ago, ten out of 50 shots hit the net, today maybe three. It is very difficult for a football player to score a goal from two meters away, the Italian emphasized.

According to Buffon, special commissions should be created to conduct the necessary studies, tests and decide on a possible change in the dimensions of the goals, which have remained unchanged over the years and are 7.32 meters wide and 2.44 meters high.
