There is no chance to impose quantitative restrictions EU agricultural trade with UkraineOr special measures to prevent excessive imports from this country – reports RMF FM.
“There is no chance of introducing quantitative restrictions on agricultural trade with the AU. A draft EU regulation extending duty-free trade with the AU until 2025 must be adopted by the College of Commissioners on Tuesday. There is no support for the effort. Commissioner Wojciechowski and Minister Siekierski,” the station reported Brussels Correspondent.
As it is known, during the inter-ministerial consultations, it became clear that none of the commissioners' cabinet supported the position of the Polish commissioner. “Polish Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski wrote a letter to the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in which she demanded the introduction of quantitative restrictions on Ukrainian sugar and poultry, as well as the adoption of emergency measures, which the European Commission has already used once. Blocking grain imports to neighboring countries of Ukraine at the EU level,” we read. It is added that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, is putting a lot of personal pressure on the Commission without trade restrictions.
What will Poland do?
The draft regulation on the extension of duty-free trade with Ukraine until June 6, 2025 should be adopted by the College of Commissioners on Tuesday. – The decision is made collegially and not by voting, so the lack of support of the Polish commissioner does not matter – says RMF FM interlocutor from the European Commission.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Michal Kolodziezhak, commented on this issue. “Poland does not agree with the idea put forward by the European Commission to continue the liberalization of trade with Ukraine under the existing conditions, which endangers Polish farmers. The interest of Polish farmers, our food security and profitable production is a priority,” he assures us. Kolodziejak.
