Zelensky: I am still convinced that Russia can be defeated

The three-day annual conference on security and defense began in Sweden on Sunday. The guest of honor was King Carl XVI Gustaf. The event was opened by the President of Ukraine.

Zelensky: Russia can be defeated

– Two years of this war have proven that Europe needs its own sufficient arsenal to protect freedom, its own capabilities to ensure self-defense – addressed Volodymyr Zelensky. Russia can be stopped by our mutual solidarity. I am still convinced that Russia can be defeated, he emphasized.

The President of Ukraine also expressed his support Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. I hope that the Turkish Parliament will agree to Sweden joining NATO, he said.

Sweden is one step closer to NATO

At the end of December, the Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Parliament supported the ratification of the protocol of Sweden's accession to NATO. The final decision on this issue should be made by the Turkish Parliament. In order to ratify the accession protocol, the decision must be supported by a simple majority of MEPs.

In order for a new country to join NATO, the parliaments of all NATO member countries must approve its application for membership. Currently, 29 out of 31 NATO countries have approved Sweden's proposal in their parliaments. Apart from Turkey, Hungary has not yet made a decision.

In May 2022, Finland and Sweden applied for the possibility of joining the North Atlantic Alliance in an accelerated manner, without implementing the Membership Action Plan. At the end of June, NATO leaders officially invited both countries to join the pact. Then the process of ratification of the relevant protocol by the parliaments of the NATO member states began. All countries have ratified the protocol Finland's accession to NATO. In the end it was Hungary and Turkey.
